Well, the dust has settled on another Fermoy show, and it’s time for my annual bore-everyone-to-death list of people who need to be acknowledged for all their hard work!

There’s a small group of people who have done all the hard work that went on for months to organise everything and for your hard work on Sunday ensuring it all ran (relatively) smoothly on the day… Donie Brown, Danny Healy, Cian O‘Connor, Aoife Douglas, Alan Lomasney, Mark Dolan, Adrian Fehily, Don Burke, Andrew Fanning, Tony O’Connor, Melanie Dale……..take a bow lads and lassies…….you’re efforts have resulted in all the positive feedback we’ve received for the show.

A special mention is due to Michael Healy, for providing the soundtrack and ambience for the day…..his chilled out, laidback playlist added immensely to the great vibe and relaxed atmosphere of the show….

As always, major thanks are due to Wayne McCarthy and the McCarthy family for both the fantastic venue and the sponsorship of some truly unique prizes again this year.

The support for the show from clubs and communities was bigger than ever this year: our own VAGE.ie members of course, GTI-NI, vagdrivers.net, Midlands VW, AudiClubIslands.org, eircooled.ie all came along and put on excellent displays.

We had more sponsors this year than ever before…..Detailer.ie, CleanCar.ie, EirePlates.com, George Dalton’s Garage, FKPerformance.ie, Blok51, JK Products, WayneMacVW.com, Autowerks-Cork, Mick’s Tyres Ltd.… Thank you again for your support and attendance on the day…..we hope the trip was worth it for ye…

Thanks also to everyone who assisted and participated in the very difficult task of judging this year….the standard of cars is getting better all the time, and this makes judging even harder, with a number of classes closely fought, won and lost by only a point or two in some cases.

And finally, to everyone who attended the show, and brought your fantastic machinery with you……this is what makes Fermoy the show it is…..without your support and attendance it would be just another car park……your hard work and attention to detail has to be applauded……you do our show and the Irish VAG community proud…….to those of you who took home trophies, congratulations…….to those of you who didn’t quite make it, commiserations and best of luck for future shows.

Next year is our tenth anniversary, so we promise, bigger, better and more of what makes our little show in a leafy corner of Cork special…watch this space!

If anyone has anything they liked, or thinks could be improved on, we're glad to hear your thoughts.

Cheers, Paul.

GTI-International, the UK’s biggest gathering for VW enthusiasts, is now in its 24th year, and in its 6th year at the excellent Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome, near Leicester.  The show attracts 10,000+ visitors over the course of its two day run, with people and cars from all over Europe attending, with some attendees travelling all the way from the USA or Australia! 2011 saw VAGE attending for the 6th year in a row, with our cars on display for the 5th year running as part of the massive clubstand area.

Limerick Show 2011….

For the Irish VAG enthusiast, the end of May always means one thing…..it’s time to head for Limerick, for the annual VW & Classic Show. The show, which has been held for many decades, was this year in its third year at the University of Limerick campus; a venue which everyone agrees is a perfect spot for a car show; all held on tarmac, easily accessed by all major routes into Limerick city, and with plenty of space for hundreds of vehicles.  2011 again saw a good turnout, which, while possibly down slightly on previous years’ attendances according to organisers, still had plenty to offer in quality as well as quantity. The show is divided into two distinct groups: a classic car show which caters for all makes, models and vintages, with dedicated prizes handed out after judging at the end of the day, and a VW show, split between air- and water-cooled, again with two sets of trophies up for grabs for those interested in bringing home a bit of silverware for the cabinet. Both shows are held on two separate areas of the expansive showground. Of course it was the VW’s we were there to see, but its always nice to take a leisurely stroll around the classic car area, where there is always a wealth of beautifully prepared and restored machinery to see…….RS Fords, Mercedes-Benz, MG’s, Porsches, Minis, Jaguar, Maserati and Ferrari……something to suit all tastes.

Johnboy picked me up about three weeks ago at 6.45 and we dropped his MK2 to his place and then came back and loaded mine on the trailer.
Gotta love MK2’s and halfraud’s batteries, it hasn’t been started in about 5 months but with a tractor battery and a set of fat jump leads up she fired not a bother. Drove the car up onto the trailer and off we went..

So here's how the story begins......

Me and Mel were up in Autowerks last summer, getting some work done on the Ur-S6, when we spotted a dusty, dirty Corrado siting under one of the lifts, looking very sorry for itself....

I took a good look round her, and spotted the all important 'G60' badge under all the dust.....suddenly we were interested....very interested!

She was straight, but looked like she needed a fair amount of tlc......but she had potential....

A quick enquiry then turned out that she was for sale.......after a bit of conversation, some negotiation and a handshake, a price was agreed and the deal was done......'Jessie the G60' was moving to the Deise!

As she hadn't moved, never mind being fired up, in over five years, she needed some remedial electrical work and some mechanical fettling before the drive down to her new home in Co. Waterford, so Alan, Kevin and James, Autowerks-Cork's intrepid trio, set to work preparing her for the trip.

While they were at it, they fully installed a later-spec all-black interior and converted the historically troublesome electric windows to manual trouble-free items. Some optimistic alarm wiring by a previous owner also had to be rectified, so this was all done too, along with a full service and comprehensive healthcheck.

Finally the phone-call came.....''that yoke is ready to roll, come up and collect her''.....I could almost hear the relief in Alan's voice! But credit where credit is due, the lads did a great job, and she was running like a swiss clock....

The trip home got off to a dubious start....we ran out of petrol before we made it out of the Autowerks yard!! A quick splash 'n' dash of juice from a jerry-can and we were on our way.

I can remember every mile of that first 60-mile spin.......Alan's words ringing in my ears ''go easy with her for a while, she hasn't been driven on a long spin in years''........I faithfully stuck to 50-60mph in 5th most of the way .......well, almost most of the way....

The power and torque from the 1.8 supercharged engine is awesome, even in standard tune........and the soundtrack that accompanies it is fantastic; the whine of the 'charger along with the roar from the wide-bore stainless exhaust system sounds like God clearing his throat when you press down on the 'loud' pedal! This car doesn't need a stereo, I thought to myself, when you've got a noise like that to listen to!

We arrived home safely, and sent a quick SMS to Alan to let him know we'd made it home without incident......''Good Stuff...Enjoy!'' was his reply.

So now the plans are afoot as to how we're gonna fettle her for her planned debut in Fermoy 2011.

Mel's plan is some refurbed Keskin KT1's, some SWG Motorsport goodies, Lupo GTi wiper conversion, lots of Lamin-X Gunsmoke and a debadged grill......with one or two more litle touches to put her Pixie stamp well and truly on this gem of a car....

Stay posted for regular pics and updates on how this project progresses......

After discovering a few bits of rust on the MK2 it was taken to a friend with a welder. First bit was two wan euro sized holes where the boot struts sit when the boot is closed and the second the battery tray. So Johnboy (the man with the welder) started hacking away on the boot bits and decided he wants to see how bad the battery tray has gone. Then all hell breaks loose, he points to a few places under the bonnet and they instantly turn to brown metal. Both chassis legs and around the driver’s side suspension turret are well w4nked. Fcuker, there was no rust there when I arrived.

The road to Belfast may be long, but it's well worth the trip when you've got one of Ireland's best VAG shows at the end of your journey....
The end of March means one thing to Ireland's VAG owners, builders and enthusiasts...DUBSHED.
Now in it's second year, GTI-NI's eclectic mix of indoor and outdoor venue, based in the showgrounds around Belfast's King's Hall, has gone from strength to strength in only it's second year.

Our day started early with our alarms set for 4 a.m. ( WIth the clock going forward an hour that night, it made it all the more painful!),but Simon, Gethin, Nigel and all the guys from GTI-NI, made it all worthwhile....to have organised and run a show as good as Dubshed 2011, is no small achievement. Take a bow lads!
The show had everything you could wish for......
Top quality show cars and hundreds of daily drivers, polished to within an inch of their lives!
There were VAG-group rally cars on display, trade stands for those with money burning a hole in their pockets and plenty of top quality motors for us to admire.

We didn't get the blistering sunshine that sent us all home scorched from Dubsheds' debut in 2010 but that didn't dampen anyone's spirits.
If this show continues to grow in size and quality, at this rate it's fair to say it will be on par with many mainland U.K. events in no time.
Check out the VAGE gallery for pics of Dubshed 2011.

Roll on Dubshed 2012!
